SMET is launching the implementation phase of the SMET Guida Sicura project, an initiative that marks a concrete step forward in the evolution of company processes related to safety and the management of mobile staff.

The project, developed in collaboration with Oraigo, introduces advanced technology based on artificial intelligence systems capable of assisting drivers in preventing drowsiness and proactively managing driving conditions. This is not an accessory, but a tool integrated into daily work, designed to intervene before a risk turns into an incident.

The operational phase begins with the first drivers in the group already equipped with the technology. Among them are Davide, Stefan, and Nicola, who served as the starting point for a process destined to gradually expand to the entire fleet. Their participation made it possible to launch a structured process where technology and expertise come together in the field.

Leading the rollout was engineer Paola Voto, head of operational management for the SMET group, who, together with her team, coordinated the distribution of the equipment and the training of the driving staff. The approach adopted focused on understanding the tools, providing operational support, and integrating them into actual work processes.

The value of the project lies not solely in the technology employed, but in the approach through which it is implemented. SMET views safety as a fundamental component of its business model, rather than merely a regulatory requirement. The use of artificial intelligence fits into this vision, with the aim of enhancing driver awareness, reducing the margin for error, and improving the overall quality of operations.

SMET Safe Driving therefore represents a direct investment in people and the future of transportation, where innovation and responsibility move in the same direction.

The project’s progress will be progressively expanded and monitored, with constant updates on development phases and operational results.

The CEO of the SMET Group, Domenico De Rosa, appeared on Rai News 24 during an interview with journalist Luca Gaballo focused on the crisis in the Strait of Hormuz and its consequences for the international energy system, as well as for European mobility and logistics.

In his remarks, De Rosa highlighted how the situation has now taken on structural characteristics that are bound to have a long-term impact on energy markets and the operating costs of transport companies.

“The problem isn’t just about the reduction in shipping traffic through the Strait of Hormuz. The real issue is what will remain after this crisis. Affected refineries, damaged facilities, reduced production capacity, and the long time required for the full restoration of the Gulf’s energy infrastructure will have effects that will shape the market for years to come,” De Rosa stated during the interview.

The analysis by the CEO of the SMET Group focuses in particular on the direct impact that the energy crisis is already having on the European logistics sector, with repercussions on mobility costs, industrial fleets, and the entire supply chain.

“Against a backdrop of prolonged geopolitical instability, logistics is once again emerging as one of the first real indicators of the state of the global economy. When energy costs rise structurally, the impact is quickly felt in transportation, the distribution of goods, and the economic decisions made by households and businesses,” added De Rosa.

During the interview, it was also emphasized that, in such a complex phase, intermodality, operational efficiency, and the ability of companies to rapidly adapt their logistics networks to new international scenarios are taking on an increasingly strategic role.

The SMET Group continues to closely monitor the evolution of the international crisis and its effects on energy markets and European logistics flows.

Domenico De Rosa, CEO of the SMET Group, received the 2026 Innovation Cybersecurity Award during the Innovation Cybersecurity Summit, the sixth edition of the event organized by the National Association of Young Innovators (ANGI) in collaboration with the European Parliament Offices in Italy. The Summit was held on April 14 and 15, 2026, in the Aula Magna of the Guglielmo Marconi University in Rome, under the high patronage of the National Cybersecurity Agency and the Agency for Digital Italy.

De Rosa was invited as a speaker to share the perspective of an industrial operator on a topic that, for a logistics group moving goods across ten European countries as well as Tunisia and Malta, is no mere theoretical matter. The operational continuity of a supply chain today also depends on the resilience of the digital systems that govern it. An attack on a transport operator’s technological infrastructure does not merely mean business damage: it means halted supply chains, blocked goods, and costs that are passed down the entire production chain.

In this vein, De Rosa brought to the Summit a concrete perspective on cyber risk—that of someone who manages fleets, routes, tracking systems, and interoperability platforms every day

In SMET’s view, cybersecurity is not a compliance cost but a fundamental component of competitiveness: it protects drivers, customers, data, and the reputation of a company that has built its identity on the reliability of its service.

This recognition adds to a long list of awards and distinctions that demonstrate how SMET’s commitment to innovation, safety, and sustainability is widely recognized—from the transportation sector to government institutions, and from the business world to the fields of defense and digital security. An award that Cavaliere De Rosa does not view as a point of arrival, but as confirmation that the direction taken is the right one and that the contribution to the public debate on these issues must continue with even greater determination.

SMET is pleased to welcome a new female driver to its team, once again confirming a corporate vision that puts people, the value of work, and shared growth at the center.

The addition of a new professional to the team represents an important moment for the entire Group and is part of a path consistent with SMET’s identity, which has always been focused on building a solid, open environment capable of recognizing merit.

In a strategic sector such as transportation and logistics, inclusion means creating concrete opportunities, valuing skills, broadening participation, and strengthening a work culture based on respect and responsibility every day. It is a choice that translates into action and helps make the group increasingly stronger, more modern, and more representative.

For SMET, welcoming new professionals means investing in the future and continuing to give substance to a business model in which human capital remains the primary driver of development.
We extend our warmest welcome to our new driver and wish her a long and rewarding professional journey, filled with growth and shared achievements alongside the SMET Group.

SMET brings innovation to the heart of government institutions. A project developed in collaboration with ANGI and Oraigo was presented at the Chamber of Deputies, offering a clear and concrete vision for the future of logistics. Technology, safety, and human value become part of a shared journey aimed at strengthening the country’s transportation system and competitiveness.

The initiative took place in the presence of government officials, including the Undersecretary of the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport, Senator Antonio Iannone, and the Chair of the Chamber of Deputies’ European Union Policies Committee, the Honorable Alessandro Giglio Vigna. This institutional participation confirms the significance of a project that combines technological innovation with entrepreneurial expertise.

SMET chose an institutional venue to present this project because logistics represents a strategic pillar of the national economy. Innovating transportation means improving safety, the quality of work, and the efficiency of the production system. It also means investing in people, their well-being, and their central role in a sector that supports the country’s growth every day.

The partnership with ANGI and Oraigo stems from a shared vision. Innovation must be practical, applicable, and capable of generating real value. Technology thus becomes a tool at the service of people, rather than a mere exercise in modernity—an approach that has always defined SMET’s journey.

Founded in 1947, SMET has built an entrepreneurial culture over time based on development, research, and responsibility. The company has consistently invested in process modernization and skill development, anticipating transformations in the logistics sector and contributing to its evolution.

The project presented to the Chamber of Deputies represents a further step in this direction. An initiative that reinforces the role of logistics as a driver of innovation and development, a concrete demonstration of how collaboration between businesses, institutions, and technology can generate new opportunities for the future.

SMET thus continues its growth journey with determination and vision: innovating to improve work, to increase safety, and to build value.

Because the future of logistics depends on technology, but always begins with people.

SMET took center stage in Prato at Meet the Champions, the initiative promoted by ItalyPost that brings together some of the country’s most solid and representative businesses. It is a setting for genuine dialogue, where the company is not described in abstract terms, but through concrete experiences, industrial vision, and results built over time.

During the event, SMET had the opportunity to share its story, which began in 1947 and has evolved through decades of growth, investment, and transformation—an entrepreneurial journey rooted in responsibility, reliability, and the ability to adapt while staying true to its values.

Telling the story of what we do at SMET means talking about concrete work, organization, people, and infrastructure built over time. It means describing an industrial model that supports production chains every day, accompanies the growth of our customers, and contributes to the development of local communities.

The initiative also represented an important opportunity for dialogue with entrepreneurs from various sectors, united by a vision focused on solidity, sustainable growth, and long-term value creation. A high-quality exchange in which the importance of business as a real driver of the economy clearly emerged.

For SMET, participating in Meet the Champions was an opportunity to strongly reaffirm its industrial identity and its daily commitment. Since 1947, we have been creating value through hard work, investment, and a vision that looks to the future without losing sight of our history.

A story that continues. Every day.

In Europe, people continue to talk about the ecological transition as if it were a linear, rational, almost automatic process. A process that, once the direction is set, is supposed to produce environmental, industrial, and social benefits in a progressive and harmonious manner. But while the public debate remains suspended between reassuring slogans and declarations of principle, in the industrial reality a very concrete mechanism is being built and is already fully operational. A mechanism that has only one immediately measurable effect: increasing costs throughout the entire value chain, without guaranteeing environmental results at least proportional to the effort imposed.

The EU ETS system and, even more evidently, ETS 2 are increasingly taking the form of a price multiplier. Not an instrument of industrial policy. Not an investment accelerator. But an indirect fiscal lever that generates a competitive disadvantage for European companies, hitting sectors already under heavy regulatory, financial, and operational pressure.

The central issue is simple, yet systematically ignored. These mechanisms affect operating costs, not the transformative capacity of the production system. If there are no truly effective, scalable, and infrastructure-ready technical alternatives available on a large scale, taxing fuel does not accelerate the transition. It makes labor, transportation, and production more expensive. This financial pressure does not create new industrial opportunities, but rather squeezes profit margins, reduces the liquidity available for investment, and pushes companies toward defensive rather than transformative choices.

In the transportation and logistics sector, this mechanism is already evident. The gradual introduction of ETS 2 on fuel does not automatically create zero-emission vehicles suitable for long-distance travel, nor does it create widespread, functional infrastructure. Instead, it creates an immediate increase in the cost per kilometer. That cost is passed on to the industrial client, who in turn passes it on to the final product. The result is not a structural reduction in emissions, but “green” inflation that affects businesses and consumers without actually changing production processes.

The second effect is even more insidious. Regulatory pressure is repeatedly passed down the same supply chains. Transportation, manufacturing, distribution, and retail end up bearing the same burden at different points in the value chain. The result is a ripple effect that is reflected in final prices, eroding competitiveness and suppressing demand and investment. It is not a selective push toward technological change. It is a generalized increase in system costs.

There is also a consequence that Europe is well aware of but continues to underestimate. If costs rise here but not elsewhere, the economic reaction is natural and predictable: shifting production volumes, facilities, and investments outside European borders. Global emissions do not decrease. Only the geography of production changes. The climate does not improve. European industry weakens, losing competitiveness, skilled jobs, and technological capacity.

This mechanism creates a profound paradox. Europe risks becoming the continent that taxes emissions, while the rest of the world continues to produce without comparable constraints. This is not climate leadership. It is industrial marginalization.

Added to this is a structural limitation of the ETS model. The ETS and ETS 2 still distinguish too little between those who have already invested, those who are investing, and those who, due to technological or infrastructural limitations, cannot yet do so. In the absence of a genuine transition phase, without technological neutrality that is practiced—not merely declared—we end up penalizing even the most virtuous operators. Not for lack of will, but for lack of concrete alternatives available on the market.

Decarbonization is not achieved by raising bills and fines. It cannot be built using price alone. Major industrial transformations occur when industrial policy, infrastructure, and private capital move in the same direction. The transition is achieved through investments in infrastructure, through real and efficient intermodality, through the progressive and sustainable renewal of the vehicle fleet, through genuinely available and competitive low-emission fuels, through regulatory certainty, and through timelines consistent with the industry’s ability to adapt without self-destruction.

Different institutional choices are needed. Less fiscal automatism and more supportive tools. Less ideology and more industrial pragmatism. Selective incentives for those who truly invest, European funds tied to concrete infrastructure, a revision of ETS mechanisms that transforms them from a punitive tool into a lever for real transition. And above all, a vision that brings together the environment, competitiveness, and jobs.

Without this shift in approach, the risk is clear. ETS and ETS 2 will primarily become a source of new revenue for Brussels’ coffers, while the economic and social costs are shifted onto productive regions. This imbalance undermines consensus, weakens Europe’s industrial base, and makes the transition increasingly unsustainable—even politically.

At this point, the question is not ideological but pragmatic. If the ETS and ETS 2 primarily result in extra costs and a loss of competitive advantage, what is the truly effective tool for reducing emissions without undermining jobs, investment, and industrial competitiveness in Europe? The answer cannot be yet another tax disguised as a transition measure.
