Domenico De Rosa, CEO of the SMET Group:

“This is a strongly negative economic indicator for the whole country, urgent measures are needed to foster recovery”

Freight traffic in the ports of Naples and Salerno is still slowing down, falling by 3.8% in the first half of 2023 compared to the same period last year.

Highlighting this further decline is the Statistical Bulletin recently published by the Port System Authority of the Central Tyrrhenian Sea, which provides all the details on the individual ports and the various maritime transport segments. In particular, in Salerno in the first six months of 2023 a total of 6.519.665 tonnes of goods were handled, a drop of 5,7% compared to the previous year. Even more critical is the scenario of ro-ro transport, which is the vocation of Campania’s second largest port: 111.244 ro-ro units, down 8,3% compared to the first six months of 2022.

“We do not hide our concern about this significant downturn, which in our view represents a strongly negative economic indicator not only for Southern Italy but also for the country as a whole,” commented Domenico De Rosa, CEO of the SMET Group – This is in fact yet another abrupt setback, which in the final analysis we must attribute to the ECB’s excessive focus on the return of inflation to 2% and a monetary policy of continually raising interest rates, which has taken resources away from business investment and the purchasing power of private citizens, seriously damaging the real economy. Urgent measures are needed to foster recovery”.

“As we regularly operate in the Salerno hinterland and other southern Italian ports, we are also concerned about the new ZES regulations, which create a Single Special Economic Zone for the whole of southern Italy and establish a special tax credit from which, however, strategic production sectors, including transport, are excluded,” De Rosa continued. “We trust in appropriate changes that can attract investments linked to international trade flows.

And he concluded: ‘We hope that the ECB will not raise interest rates above the 4% touched with the last tightening a few days ago, and that a first cut can take place as early as April 2024. But what is certain is that the energy crisis has contributed decisively to the rise in inflation. The very rise in oil, which is currently close to USD 100 per barrel, risks inflaming inflation again, just when a radical change in the monetary policy pursued by Europe is urgently needed’.

Dizzying figures that show how the logistics and transport sector is confirming its role as a driving force not only for the economy of the entire country but also for a general sense of psychological recovery. In fact, the number of kilometres travelled by heavy goods vehicles in May 2021 increased by 357.2% compared to the same month in 2020 at the height of the pandemic. A number that should not, however, be misleading. Despite the closures, it should be noted that the transport of goods and merchandise has never stopped, even during the terrible lockdown period.

This is encouraging data, which was also well received by the CEO of SMET, Domenico De Rosa: «Road haulage confirms itself as the natural carrier of economic recovery and the restart of our country, said the chairman of the Motorways of the Sea Commission of ALIS, the Sustainable Intermodal Logistics Association, who then went on to set out other data. On the average day, heavy vehicle traffic increased by 204%, while light vehicle traffic grew by 25%. This makes it clear once again that there can be no economic recovery without efficient and effective transport».

Significant numbers, which come just a few days before the three-day ALIS event, scheduled to take place in Sorrento from 1 to 3 July. Many themes will be at the centre of the debate: from the Green to the Blue Economy and sustainability. ALIS is the association for sustainability, says De Rosa forcefully. «Years ahead of the Ministry, the Association, chaired by Guido Grimaldi, has put the word sustainability in its name. We believe that being sustainable, carrying out environmentally friendly industrial policies, is an important opportunity and source of income. Doing good for us and our planet is worthwhile».

But is it always right to talk about a restart for a sector like Logistics and Transport that has never really stopped?

«The restart, from a psychological point of view, is underway and is not in doubt, concludes SMET’s CEO. The year 2020 has highlighted all the weaknesses of a fragile economic and social system. From an industrial point of view, however, I must admit that we cannot speak of a restart, since we have never stopped. I think that, humanly speaking, we have done even more than we could have done».

Smet’s CEO, Domenico De Rosa, had already announced in January that 2021 would be the year of rebirth after an annus horribilis not to be forgotten. The Covid emergency has certainly put the entire logistics and transport sector in a new light, and in recent months it has earned the applause and praise (as well as television commercials from the former Ministry of Transport). For De Rosa, relaunching the sector is a question of investment, and this is where Smet intends to play its part, strengthening a system such as intermodality which, according to his analysis, will soon become indispensable. A policy that has the dual purpose of cutting costs and protecting the staff involved from Covid contagion risks, making it the real bulwark for sustainable mobility.

«In the mid-1990s, the SMET Group pioneered the development of intermodal maritime and rail transport,” said De Rosa during an interview, “which is still a top priority for us today. Today we move over three thousand vehicles per week on our ships, in addition to 16 company trains, also per week. 2021 will be a turning point for intermodal transport, thanks to the arrival of the Grimaldi Group’s giant ecological ships, which will revolutionise ro-ro traffic and the organisation of transport along the Tyrrhenian coast. We anticipate a rapid growth in intermodal traffic and we are organising ourselves accordingly: we have already ordered 1000 additional semi-trailers and expect to take on around 200 new recruits. At the same time we are giving a strong boost to rail intermodality. In January, in partnership with TX Logistics of the Mercitalia Group, we inaugurated the rail service for semi-trailers from Bologna Interporto to the TKN North Terminal in Cologne».

Intermodality is also a key policy of Europe, which has set 2050 as the deadline for cutting CO2 emissions and creating real sustainable mobility, a project widely supported by the current Prime Minister Draghi.

«The European Commission’s current demands for ecological and sustainable neutrality are by 2050 for all member states,” continues De Rosa, “The progress of transport already has a clear and precise deadline, 30 years before the indicated date, so everyone will have to ensure that freight mobility converges towards a modal shift. Because we have realised that this is the recipe for zero emissions. Of course, intermodal transport alone is not enough, and that’s why, together with Iveco, we started a dialogue years ago on the subject of alternative drives. One example is the use of LNG, liquefied gas, instead of diesel. Today, we are in the early stages of hydrogen and full electric drives. All these implementations will be the basis for achieving carbon neutrality».

Finally, intermodality as a means of reducing the risk of contagion in the Covid era.

«We have an advantage with intermodality when we reduce the mobility of people,” concludes the entrepreneur, “The virus travels with people. If we are able to limit travel and have only the assets, i.e. the trailers, we have in fact avoided the risks of human transfer. We can therefore say that intermodality, as of today, considering transport indispensable for maintaining a socio-economic order, is the best system for achieving Covid-free».

In quanto tempo rientrate dell’investimento?

In 2018, the province of Salerno registered as many trucks as those registered in the whole of Tuscany.
The province of Salerno alone registers the same number of trucks as the entire region of Tuscany, more than Puglia and not far from the result of Sicily. The data from the Motor Vehicles Authority say this: in 2018, in the province of Salerno, as many as 1,114 trucks were registered above 3.5 tons, of which 994 with a total mass of 16 tons or more. A growth of 27.8% compared to the previous year, when only 778 trucks were registered.

The province of Salerno registers as the entire region of Campania

Taken in absolute, probably, the number of trucks registered in a year in Salerno does not say much. However, in order to understand the extent of the phenomenon, it is sufficient to compare them with those of neighbouring countries. For example, in the whole territory of the Campania region, 2,407 lorries with a mass greater than or equal to 3.5 tonnes have been registered. In other words, almost half of the heavy vehicles newly registered in Campania have a Salerno plate. Even more sensational, then, is the comparison with other regions: in Puglia, for example, were registered only 947 units, well below the result achieved in the province of Salerno alone. In Tuscany, where the figure closest to that of Salerno is recorded, 1,287 trucks were registered. In Sicily, where there was a slightly higher result than in Tuscany, 1,331 heavy vehicles were registered.

The number of commercial vehicles is also growing

These data are not random. This is also demonstrated by the numbers of the car park with Salerno plate circulating. In 2018, in fact, there were 94,293 industrial vehicles registered in Salerno and province area. Of these, 7,240 were road tractors and tractors, while 13,334 were trailers and semi-trailers with mass over 3.5 tons. Not only heavy vehicles, however, because also the number of commercial vehicles grows in the province of Salerno, in step with the industrial vehicles.

Smet driving Salerno’s growth

A result achieved by the province of Salerno, which has been possible also and above all thanks to the commitment of companies such as Smet Logistics. In fact, in the company now led by Domenico De Rosa, the focus is firmly on environmental sustainability. It is no coincidence that Smet has been one of the first companies to adopt road tractors powered by liquid natural gas. The commitment in this sense, as repeatedly stated, will continue in the years to come, until 2023 when the company will only buy vehicles with alternative traction.

According to data from 2019, the motorways of the sea have become one of the main activities in the port of Salerno. In fact, from January to August, 5.5 tons of rolling stock were handled in the city port, with an increase of 5.35%. And, in this sector, Salerno goes at double speed compared to Naples. In contrast to container traffic, 3.6 million tons of rolling stock were handled in the Neapolitan port, almost half of those of Salerno, with a loss of 1.97%.

«The growth of the ro-ro segment in the port of Salerno testifies that the future of the planet is more and more tied to intermodal transport modes, which guarantee sustainability and efficiency – points out Domenico De Rosa, managing director of the Smet Group – We have been pioneers of green at a European level: for some time we have in fact chosen intermodality operating in partnership with the Grimaldi Group and contributing in this way to the development of our port».

How do you explain this boom?

«The port of Salerno has a strategic position with respect to the whole of southern Italy. And, moreover, it has a consolidated leadership. The dredging of the seabed will also allow to further strengthen services as the port of Salerno will be able to accommodate the latest generation of ships, which are increasingly large, able to generate economies of scale by transporting a greater number of vehicles».

Is there any provision for new investment in the motorways of the sea at the port of Salerno?

«Certainly, starting with the logistical support platforms. And this will produce important employment effects and great opportunities for manufacturing and distribution companies throughout the South».

Can the port of Salerno always retain its multi-product character?

«I had the opportunity to meet the president of the Central Tyrrhenian Sea Port System Authority, Pietro Spirito, and I appreciated his quality and effectiveness. I spoke with him on the subject of dredging and on how much effort the Authority is making to complete this fundamental work. I believe that in the port of Salerno there is the possibility to operate on rolling stock, on containers and on various goods, which are the three main activities of the port. It is hoped that there will be a functional rationalization of the areas and a methodology that allows the maximum safety on the job and the maximum productivity of the areas».

How come the port of Salerno, for the ro-ro traffic, has almost doubled, as tonnage of rolling stock, that of Naples?

«Because Salerno has the most important operators. The attraction comes from the combined large and strong shipowner, who has put the base in Salerno, and from the most significant logistic groups that are from Salerno».

For the network of Motorways of the Sea, Salerno is an increasingly strategic port of call, offering regular maritime connections for the transport of rolling stock to the Iberian Peninsula, Sicily, Sardinia, Genoa and North Africa.

«I think that the margins of growth are still wide: I am referring in particular to the dredging interventions that we trust and that will be a further impulse to intermodal transport, because they will allow the Grimaldi Group to position in Salerno the new 500 trailer ships».

What is the future of logistics?

«It will be green and sustainable, both environmentally and economically. Companies that have reduced their environmental impact will be rewarded and intermodal activities will be preferred to all roads».

Smet logistics was awarded the Grimaldi Excellence Awards 2019 on the occasion of the XXIII Euro-Med Convention from Land to Sea. This is the award that the Grimaldi Group assigns to the best partners of the group, precisely on the occasion of the annual meeting promoting short sea shipping.

Smet receives the Grimaldi Excellence Awards 2019

The award ceremony was held last October 4, at the Giardini Naxos in Taormina, in front of more than 400 delegates, including those from the International Maritime Organization, the Italian European institutions, the maritime and port authorities, as well as the logistics managers of the major European multinationals. The award was presented to Smet Logistic’s managing director, Domenico De Rosa, by Grimaldi’s president Guido Grimaldi himself.

«We are proud of this prestigious award given to our Group in the presence of the whole world of sustainable logistics, in Taormina – commented Domenico De Rosa on the sidelines – and we are increasingly determined to pursue our environmental policies of modal conversion of transport flows of our customers, which we thank once again for the trust they show us every day». The award in fact represents a further confirmation of how much, by now, Smet has become a reality of reference in the field of transport.

The XXIII Euro-Med Convention from Land to Sea

The international summit organized by the Grimaldi Group, now in its twenty-third edition, is the event that involves all the most important players in the transport and logistics sector. The aim of the XXIII Euro Med Convention from Land to Sea this year was to discuss topics such as energy efficiency, environmental sustainability and the opportunities offered by intermodal transport and short sea shipping.

Themes that arise directly from the important investments that the Grimaldi Group has made to promote decarbonisation policies to protect the environment. Policies aimed at adapting the Group to the new regulations on emissions, IMO 2020. According to this, from 1 January 2020, ships can no longer have sulphur emissions greater than 0.5%. In this sense, 101 ships of the Grimaldi fleet out of a total of 130 have already been equipped with an exhaust gas purification system. The remaining ships, on the other hand, will be powered by clean fuels from 2020, which will further reduce emissions. Not to mention, of course, the order of 17 ships, already in line with the latest regulations on emissions.

Road, rail, sea: intermodality is the future of transport and the market of semi-trailers and containers is realizing it

Container transport is the only sector that has not been affected by the decline recorded at the end of 2018; also for this year the forecasts are good. Behind this optimism there is an increase in interzone traffic also by rail, despite the delays and limitations that afflict the infrastructure, and a rather old fleet of semi-trailers that physiologically requires renewal. Flexibility is also the most important demand here: full length fixed trailers cannot meet every need, so extensible and tilting trailers are carving out interesting market shares. A very important news is the return of the floors suitable also for indivisible loads, almost disappeared because penalized by the tare of the structure and the wooden floor; the possibility of using them also outside the interzonal transport is reopening their interesting market niches. Always alive also the market of the semi-trailers that can be driven on trains and ships, that are by now an important slice of the general cargo vehicles; it is essential in this sector, the regulation of the height of the trailer: many railway tunnels are in fact not yet suitable for the transit of taller vehicles.

Ten years of experimentation with 18-metre articulated lorries have yielded positive results. Now the supply chain is calling for them to be regularised and for the 25-metre EMS to be tested

So far, so good, but that’s not enough. This is the message that the road haulage industry is sending out, taking stock of the experimentation of long semi-trailers for 18-metre articulated lorries. The monitoring of the 330 vehicles (30 in circulation since 2009 and 300 from 2015) has not shown any criticality: a single accident, within a logistics platform and not related to size. The most affected sector is food: one third of the fleet has insulated or refrigerated fittings. The average load saturation rate rose from 70% in the first phase to 80% in the second; only 6% of hauliers had to review the use of tractors to provide adequate towing for the eighteen.

The next step

The long semi-trailer convinced everyone, including the drivers: the only complaints concerned the limited space of some logistics platforms and a greater criticality with empty vehicles and strong side winds. If the last general states on the subject asked the trade associations for an increase in the contingent of Eighteen, today the supply chain asks for complete liberalization. But to press there is also the request for the testing of EMS 25.25 meters. While aware that these can never be a universal solution, due to the complex orography of Italy, operators and manufacturers will ask that extra long trucks can be used on a dedicated network of roads, as is already the case in Germany. The increase in size is not matched by the increase in total weight, which will remain at 44 tonnes. Positive news also from the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport: it announced that it will not be opposed to the testing of EMS and will cooperate with manufacturers to find a way to the approval of the eighteen.

During Transpotec Logitec, the tuttoTrasporti stand was an important reference point for the thousands of enthusiasts who crowded the event.

Not just trucks and vans, equipment and services for businesses. Among the great protagonists of Transpotec Logitec 2019 must also be counted tuttoTrasporti, present with a large stand in a central position, which has recorded many appreciations among the thousands of fans who crowded the exhibition scaligero. One of the strong points of our station was also the presence of the partners who wanted to be present at the Verona event in our company: Fraikin, European leader in short-term rental services; Würth, with its complete range of systems for fixing and anchoring loads; ZF, with the latest news in terms of transmission and suspension systems; TomTom Telemarics instead exhibited its advanced services for companies and finally Mecaprom Motors proposed the electric vehicles for the distribution of goods.

Tests and trophies

At the stand of tuttoTrasporti it was also possible to register to access the tests of the trucks that were taking place in the adjacent external area. More than 700 drivers were able to drive the latest models such as the Scania R410 LNG and R500 and the Volvo FH diesel and FH 460 LNG, as well as making contact with the new Mercedes-Benz Actros. One of the highlights at our booth was undoubtedly the crowded “Transport Stars” award ceremony that our magazine assigns in each edition of Transpotec. This year the awards went to VDO-Continental, ThermoKing, Cardi, Smet Logistics, Riboni-Rbn Africa, Pris-Mag, Infogestweb. During the same ceremony, Raffaele Bonmezzadri from TuttoTrasporti (the only Italian member of the international jury that awards the prize) presented Giulio Marc D’Alberton, Head of Communication at Peugeot Italia, with the “International Van of the Year 2019” prize awarded to the PSA group.
